Today I want to talk about a little something I call the Pink Greens Daily Detox.
This is the morning routine I've been using and have been sharing with my clients over the past few months. The reason it works is because you are signaling to your body that you are awake and that it can start it's natural daily detoxing, but you're not putting anything in that makes it switch gears and go to work processing that ingredient (think dairy, meat, or gluten).
I spent years frustrated by my mornings with food. I felt like no matter what I ate, I would be hungry and tired by 11 am. This did not bode well for office life, as I would inevitably end up grazing in the office kitchen on donuts or bagels, or counting my change so I could buy pretzels from the vending machine. Or I'd be stuck in a meeting embarrassed by my grumbling tummy.
Once I started incorporating this daily detox, I found myself with more energy, feeling lighter, and, surprisingly, satisfied until lunch (which didn't seem to make any sense!). I love this habit because it's so easy to keep fresh and different. Instead of a green smoothie or juice, I sometimes do an açaí bowl with fun toppings. I also love it, because it's an easy way to get my body and weight back on track if I've had an indulgent weekend (or week!).
My first coaching client, who also happens to be my dad, Bill, lost ten pounds in his first ten days with this "daily detox" as the crux of the plan and following it with a vegan lunch (usually a big salad). As of today, he has now lost 13 pounds. His goal is 20, so he's well on his way to reaching it. He did this all while still having a few beers and "too much bread" (his words) at night, and not working out, unless you count walking his (adorable!) Labradoodle to the park a couple blocks away, which I think sort of counts.
Now...I'm not recommending you drink beer and gorge out on bread every night, but isn't it just nice to know you don't have to be totally perfect to loose a couple lbs?! The point is setting yourself in a positive trajectory. One small positive change, can lead to another positive change and, before you know it, you're looking and feeling fabulous. Your body will naturally start to crave more natural, veggie-centered foods, and you'll be shedding unwanted weight as a result.
I should also mention that if your goal is not necessarily to lose weight, you will probably notice other positive changes. I can tell you first-hand that my skin started looking smoother, my mood felt lighter, and I had noticeably more energy.
I break it all down in the video, below.
Important note: sometimes people think the salt water is super weird, so here's a little background - I went to get a facial and was recommended I incorporate this salt water into my daily routine to hydrate my skin. It has deep roots in Ayurvedic medicine. It didn't make sense to me at first. And without getting into the chemistry of it - salt has an energetic charge that actually has a hydrating effect in your body. And while it tasted funny at first, I quickly started loving it and now can't live without it. But with that said, if this is just too weird for you, by all means, skip it!
PINK GREENS DAILY DETOX
STEP 1 - SALT WATER:
1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon Atlantic grey sea salt (found at your local health food or spice store)
16 oz. hot water
Combine to dissolve using a wooden or non-metal spoon. Using metal changes the chemistry of the salt, basically turning it into table salt (and you don't want that - you want to keep the awesome, natural electric charge). Drink when you first wake up. If you have any trouble finding this salt, email me and I'll send you some!
STEP 2 - LEMON WATER:
1 lemon, squeezed
16 oz. cold or warm water (not hot because it will kill some of the benefits of the lemon)
(optional) 1/2 inch fresh ginger, peeled and pressed or chopped
(optional) pinch cayenne
Combine all ingredients, and drink up!
STEP 3 - GREEN SMOOTHIE (or smoothie bowl or green juice):
I recommend if you're just starting out, to do the smoothie or smoothie bowl because the fiber will fill you up for longer and get you through the morning.
If you want some variety or aren't feeling hungry, feel free to try juices. If you aren't juicing yourself, make sure the juice you buy is fresh (was made in the past 72 hours) and is almost all greens. Most store bought juices won't cut it. Juice bars and small, fresh pressed juice companies are great. Juice bars can usually customize for you to include more greens and less fruit. If it tastes funny to begin with, your taste buds will become more attuned to the flavors and will get used to less sugar. Then, before you know it, super sugary things (and fake sugars) will start to taste gross to you!
I want to dedicate this post to a guy who has always had coffee first thing when he woke up, a guy who has always looked and felt pretty athletic and healthy, but whose lifestyle lately has had him wanting better - my dad. My dad recently told me he wanted to lose 20 pounds. I told him I was looking for clients...and so he became...my first client!
Dad, thank you for venturing outside your comfort zone, buying a blender and being a good sport to try out something new! And waiting a little while to drink your coffee. I love you!
